Pools, Rain and Hosepipe bans.

Well March was simply divine with blistering Sun! we had a chuckle here at Evo Pools in Sunny Devon when the Clouds came ‘well summers over we called’ Not a truer word spoken, that said are these Showers we are currently receiving not too dissimilar to how it used to be in Yesteryear? “April showers”? We certainly think so.

That is about as Scientific we get about the Weather although we do watch the weather very closely as there is a distinct trend between sunshine and how much Swimming pools are used, we measure this by how much we dance around the warehouse or sit idle..

During a recent trip to the Garden we stumbled upon a rain gauge also known as a udometer or a pluviometer or an ombrometer or a cup, and what fun we have had with this during these showers We have recorded on our Pluvimeter in EX17 Crediton Devon within a 12 hour period Rain fall on the 23rd April of 150mm which was astonishing! and that will explain why the local rivers and streams around us have a lovely rich colour as they flow and twist cutting their Oxbow contours into the Devon landscapes.

Now we have to remind ourselves what impacts this could have on our swimming pools so we list some pointers and tips about how best to deal with excessive rainfall:

Help Tips and Advice on how to deal with Excess Pool water caused by Rainfall
1. Buy a rain coat (as you will need this to clean your pool in the rain)
2. Remove the swimming pool cover, in the event you have a safety cover ensure the Surface Water Pool Cover Pump
is pumping! (very very important) an inch of water across 30′ could equate to approx 1 ton in pressure we have dealt with insurance claims causing structural damage to swimming pool tops due to pump failure and in turn excessive stresses and pressures on the swimming pool tops causing concrete ring beams to fail, so be warned/ informed!
3. Once the cover is removed establish the operating swimming pool level, no doubt in the situation of a bubble cover pool/ winter debris cover or slatted pool cover system the pool would have filled up, so lets use this water to vacuum to waste, a great opportunity to do some dilution.
4. Once the level has been established, carry out a FULL swimming pool water test, this test must contain pH Alkalinity and Calcium Hardness. After all the rain is acidic and will be dropping the levels in your swimming pool dramatically, in turn this will accelerate the usage of pool chlorine or other sanitizers so a check here is crucial to keep the green bogie monster away! remember the sun is coming back after all!
5. Phosfree, during extended rainfall periods the pool digests Nitrate from the rain ALGAE FOOD! you know what is coming next Algae formation yes your pool will undoubtedly be looking to turn green as those little green algae spoors have an almighty party drinking up all your Summer Algicide and Pool Chlorine. We recommend a good test with a Phosphate kit and make the remedial action needed to remove the Nitrate from the water.
6. Algicide, with you Algicide now depleted we MUST top up once more to ensure the Swimming pool does not start to turn Hazy/ Cloudy or Bloom Blue green Algea. A good slug of Kleen Pool, Desalgine or ALgimax eliminator will be time well spent now and money!
7. Carry out an extended backwash use this overfill to really cleanse the swimming pool filter, extended backwash’s can help reduce clumping within the filter. A term used when Sand or Zeo clear material within the filter becomes clumped together being bound together by Algae growth/ Scale and general build up, this ‘Extra Pool Backwash’ Will help break down clumping and provide efficient pool filtration once more.

Well back to the Pluvimeter and it transpires whilst writing this blog, which we started between telephone call this morning Shobrooke in Crediton Devon has received 50mm of rainfall that is within a 6 hour period on the 25th of April 2012, Fantastic news for farmers and other industry’s such as the Swimming pool market who have had concerns over water restrictions following the recent nationwide water restrictions.

Now we’re not about to start selling Rain Gauges but we do sell a really handy Swimming Pool chemical measuring cup that could double as a Rain Gauge, and it is a great exercise for the kids to get involved in, I seem to remember monitoring and reporting on fall over a month at School at Naphill and Walters Ash County combined school in very early science lessons and i suppose it made Rainfall fun!

Now if you are looking for Hosepipe ban and Swimming Pool top up information look here one of our friend companies within the Pool industry have been closely working with the Swimming Pool allied trades association and updating relevant information on Hose pipe bans and how it may effect you. Re-lining a Swimming pool which thickness do i choose?

So with the Swimming pool season now in full swing brought forward by this year a repeat of the 2011 spring weather, well in fact lets face it! its a stonking spring with record temperatures. Being a seasoned pool owner you will know the first few weeks of monitoring a liner swimming pool for water loss is critical and this often is for a number of reasons:

1. The age of the swimming pool and more importantly the age of the liner.

2. Given the harsh winters of late we have experienced, we have experienced swimming pool liners failing in the winter period, mainly failure caused by frost damage the pool waters surface can often freeze over beneath the winter debris cover and as we know when water freezes it expands, this expansion can often split older liners, winter call backs and overviews can often spot this problem early.

3. Reheating the swimming pool at the beginning of the season, often the initial re-heat of the swimming pool can lead to once more splitting of the liner, more common in liners older than 10 years old. The splitting is potentially caused by expansion as the liner expands due to heat, should the liner of lost its elasticity often the liner will simply crack and release water.

4. Swimming pool gasket failure, sometimes during the winter close service the swimming pool water level is lowered beneath critical components such as the skimmer, return fittings and potentially the under water light. Lowering the water beneath these items whilst great for protecting these vital items can lead to the water tight gasket joining seals ‘drying out’ this drying of the gasket upon refill can lead to the swimming pool liner not sealing against gasket and fittings resulting in movement and potentially ripping of the liner from the fittings.

Do not fear these common swimming pool liner failures are mainly linked to age, the Ideal life span of a swimming pool liner is anything in excess of 10years these such failures can often occur well into year 15 and above in some cases.

So lets say you have experienced swimming pool liner failure and you are looking for a standard swimming pool liner replacement what thickness should you choose? a number of factors may sway your choice:

1. Budget often as a general rule the thinner the liner the lower the cost

2. Expected lifespan, if you are in a rental property and the swimming pool is your sole responsibility as thinner liner might be more beneficial if you are not to be the long term beneficiary. Equally if you simply love your swimming pool and your looking for longevity then the simple rule is the thicker liners wear and tend to last much longer.

3. Who is fitting the liner? If an expert is installing your swimming pool liner then sit back and relax as often installers are used to manipulating even the heavier grade pool liners into position, however if you are considering a self swimming pool liner installation then an middle of the road thickness ought to be considered, unless you have eaten your Weetabix.

We note in 2012 there is an industry move away from lower 0.5mm or 20thou liners, we are fairly sure this is decision that has come about over the last decade within the swimming pool industry due the complication in installing the thinnest liner on the inground swimming pool market. the historic problem with the 20thou liners is the risk of accidental damage being higher, the material can often expand too much during the installation process on very hot days and projected life being the lowest. It seems Certikin international ltd have made a very prudent move within the swimming pool market in 2012 specifically noting within their manufacturing catalog the specific note on 20 thou pool liners ‘ while stocks last ‘ a very interesting long term move, and a very wise one we are sure.

The next size in the range is now what is deemed the standard 30thou thickness liner or 0.75mm. We find this thickness has an excellent offering of choice for patterns and options within the market and certainly Evo pools new standard pool liner for inground swimming pools. We find installing 30thou liners very easy and certainly something a competent DIY’er can carry out in a weekend.

Launched in 2010 by Certikin was the 35 thou linercurrently there are serious limitations on the patterns available being … well none! the 35 thou is currently only available in the plain colours. The benefit of course with the 35 thou pool liner really is longevity the expected life of the new generation 35 thou liners is well in excess of 15 years! and if you choose to install one your will find out why the material is very heavy weight and well.. heavy so if you fancy future proofing your swimming pool and installing a 35thou pool liner yourself, then perhaps get a few friends round to help you lift and maneuver liner into position and ensure you eat something more than Weetabix and have a few Red bull energy drinks on standby you will need it!

Still our biggest selling liner thickness is the 30thou or 0.75mm swimming pool liners, with the new 35thou coming a close second. We recommend the 30thou for all self liner installers.

Swimming pool pump has Broken, What next? and How to fix it!

Swimming pool season starts … and your pump has stopped, what next?

Opening a swimming pool can be one of the stressful moments during swimming pool ownership, and often a nervous time during the re-commission period. During the winter period your pump if situated within the typical British pool shed is often subject to a small amount of damp. The slightly moist winter air can often allow moisture into some of the operating mechanics of your pool pump, one of the main areas being the pool pump bearings. During the winter the pool pump bearings can every so slightly corrode year on year the corrosion on the bearing can bind slightly more at the beginning of each swimming pool season.

Often the removal of the swimming pool pump is required to enable the pump to be worked on, work involving stripping the pump down to free the motor. However be warned sometimes stripping pumps can involve the breaking of water tight seals, breaking the swimming pool pump seals often requires the replacement of the seals upon removal as carrying out this task of freeing the motor can often lead to the pump leaking during the rebuilding process, if the seals are not replaced. On a Typical pump there are a number of seals : Pump body o’ring, mechanical pump shaft seal, pre-filter basket to body gasket, all of which require correct alignment during the rebuild process.

So assuming you have experienced a seized swimming pool pump during the opening service, or upon freeing the seized motor please be aware you must observe the pump, as often the swimming pool pump bearings can often be so badly worn a high pitched wine can be heard from the pump itself a sure indicator the bearings are past repair. In some events the high pitched ‘bearing whine’ can dull down once the bearings warm up this also can be a problem as when often the bearings cool the swimming pool motor can once more seize during the restart process when using a swimming pool pump timer. So you have exhausted all avenues for repair which is often uneconomical given the low cost of pool pump replacement these days What next?

Well there really is a spill of swimming pool pumps on the market, ranging from well known brands designed to run and run to far eastern sourced pumps often offering a low cost get out of jail card, regardless of which pump you may consider or what scale of budget you wish to apply during your replacement decision we have compiled some tips and hints listing some models and a few pros and cons.

Sta- Rite 5P2R Pool Pump 2012 Review

An extremely well known within the swimming pool industry, the service engineers favorite for servicing, this is mainly due to the large infamous Stainless steel band adjoining the wet end to the motor end, splitting the pump during a service call can be carried out within 5 minutes allowing easy access to the impeller and diffuser in a blockage situation many repairs on a Sta-Rite 5P2R can be carried out in under an hour! however not necessarily the pool owners best buy given the large pump body often making locating the pump within the plant room tricky to locate in cramped swimming pool plant rooms. The other design fault with the 5P2R is small sized swimming pool pump basket, often during a big clean emptying the pump and re-priming has to be carried out numerous times.

Certikin Aqua Speed Pool Pump 2012 Review

A proven swimming pool pump for many years now and certainly a pump that underwent some serious long term consideration during the R & D process not necessarily the easiest pump to dismantle however spares are a plenty not that much is often needed. The clever internal design ensures the swimming pool pump shaft is protected not allowing the shaft to contact the water, particularly good for use in the salt water pool environment with many of the pumps within the range offering 2″ suction and return inlets and outlets excellent for flow and blockage reduction great in leafy areas, that said the swimming pool pump basket is very large allowing a good clean of the pool before emptying is required.

Hayward Super pool pump 2012 Review

The Hayward super pump really has been around the block, now a slightly medieval looking design when compared to others however if your existing Hayward super pump has failed you can probably vouch to say it has completed over 10 years of service? it is not uncommon to hear stories of Hayward super pumps still in service for 20 years plus! The pump basket whilst square and unconventional offers a fair size for leaf collection, securing the lid can be tasking ensuring the pump lid o’ring is in situ correctly equally ensuring the correct orientation of the pump basket when refitting after emptying can take some getting used to, that said once the knack is mastered all in all an excellent pool pump with really good self priming properties.

So hopefully some helpful hints and pointers that we really hope will allow you to make a slightly more informed selection upon replacement, We will aim to review some budget pumps in the weeks to come, however as a whole we find we genuinely sell and support the upper ranges and branded swimming pool pumps due to their reliability and service offer the best long term solution we of course discount many of the larger branded swimming pool pumps ensuring a low cost solution anyway. If we can be of more help or assistance during your swimming pool pump replacement or repair please feel free to call

Swimming pool Spring Clean Vacuum hose top tips

It is that time of the year Spring has Sprung and the swimming pool season is just around the corner, The first clean is one of the most important clean of the swimming pool season. So during the traditional swimming pool open service it is vital that you swimming pool vacuum hose is in A1 condition.

Prior to setting up your swimming pool vacuum set up ensure a through inspection has taken place on your vacuum hose we list below a few pointers on how to inspect your swimming pool vacuum hose:

  1. Lay your Swimming pool vacuum hose out in a straight line
  2. Rinse off any winter debris from your hose potentially leaves or general storage cobwebs, we have heard of mice nesting within the hose! So take some care to flush the hose internally with a hose pipe also. Cleaning the hose prior to use within the swimming pool will ensure you will not add any extra unwanted debris into the swimming pool.
  3. Your swimming pool hose may have a swivel end (do not worry if yours does not) ensure the swivel is free and rotates 360 degrees, some people apply a small amount of silicone spray to ensure a good slip. Once your happy the swivel is clean and lubed check the other end of the hose typically called the non swivel end, for those of your wondering what the difference is the swivel end should always be connected to the swimming pool vacuum head to allow for a free movement of the head to hose, often non swivel end when connected to the vacuum head can work loose breaking free floating to the surface in turn pulling in air and de-priming the pump (not good) So checking the non swivel end ensure there are no cracks or the end has not become unscrewed from the hose tighten is loose. On some hoses there is an easy identifier for the swivel end Traditionally CERTIKIN have detailed their swivel end with a yellow or blue swivel head, on some versions there is also some embossed writing on the swivel providing information a gentle reminder which end connects to what, very handy.
  4. Now the boring bit, start at the swivel end and visually inspect the entire length of the hose, paying specific attention to the ribbed section of the swimming pool hose, the ribbed section over time suffers from compression caused by suction from the swimming pool pump, this compression creates a stress point on the vacuum hose causing hair line cracks to appear, these hair line cracks will cause a lack of suction when using the swimming pool vacuum hose, potentially pull in air and de-prime the swimming pool pump, once more not good. Your hose may vary from 7m to 18m so your inspection time could vary from 5-15mins time spent here could save a lot of unnecessary hard work later.
  5. Inspection and cleaning of the hose is complete, now with some further pointers below we help you how to achieve the best service from your swimming pool vacuum hose long term.

Taking care of your swimming pool hose and ensuring you have the correct hose:

  1. Always remove debris from your hose upon completion of a pool clean
  2. Ensure when in use the hose is not allowed to kink, this often results in a weak spot being created within the hose, couple that with an efficient swimming pool pump and the hose with kink restricting flow to the swimming pool pump and could potentially result in pump failure be warned.
  3. Your swimming pool hose should always be long enough, when buying a swimming pool vacuum hose for the first time or replacement ensure you locate either your vacuum hose suction location or your nearest skimmer, often swimming pool vacuum points are located in the center of the length of the swimming pool allowing you to purchase the shortest hose possible, the longer the hose is the more loss of suction you will get so never over order the length of the hose more than you require! (top tip)
  4. To ensure you get the correct length tie a piece of string to your vacuum head and immerse the head whilst connected to your telescopic pole to the far diagonal corner of your swimming pool, gentle pull the other end of the string to the vacuum point, and mark the a point on the string with a coloured pen. Now measure the string in Meters and add 1m to the total length, typically vacuum hoses come in lengths 7,9,11,12,15 and 18m hose lengths select the closet hose length nearest to your measurement always round up
  5. Storage is absolutely key to long life and good house keeping, the number one failure reason is UV damage the vacuum hoses when left in the sun will go brittle so when not in use ensure the hose is kept well out of the sun, ideally kept in a box or better still on a Vacuum reel, the Vacuum reels ensure the hose does not kink and the coil is kept in good order, if you have left the hose outdoors all winter we would recommend replacement as a matter of course due to UV and frost damage.

Other Top Swimming pool hose tips:

Consider an inline leaf trap, this will catch the leafs and debris before it reaches the swimming pool pump you can see clearly when the trap is full and needs emptying without running back and forth to the pool plant room.

Try a vacuum plate or Kornea, this plate attaches to the skimmer pot, by removing the floating bobbing weir and attaching the vac plate to the skimmer basket allows you once more to catch debris before it reaches the pump.

Hose storage reels are neatest easiest way to both deploy the hose into the swimming pool for use and the most aesthetically pleasing when storing rather than a hose kicking around the pool surround.

For those connecting your vacuum hose to skimmers where possible ensure the hose is connected through the skimmer mouth into skimmer suction point, if the hose reaches out of the pot over the pool surround and coping this can cause long term grazing to the hose wall and potentially wear through causing the pump to de-prime (not good)

We hope this information may help you achieve a longer service from your swimming maintenance equipment and help understand best practice for use when cleaning a swimming pool, over the forthcoming months our aim is to provide informed experienced tips even if it is the basics as we all have to start somewhere.
